Happy Birthday, Parveen Babi!!

The actress of beauty, sizzle and oomph, Late Parveen Babi was born today many years ago in 1949. Parveen starred opposite the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in the 70’s and 80’s and was a part of some suuper commercial blockbusters like Deewar, Namak Halaal, Amar Akbar Anthony and Shaan. She was often chosen as one of the most beautiful actresses of that era by the Indian audiences.

The girl with chiselled looks started off her career as a model before entering into the tinsel town called Bollywood. Parveen changed the face of an Indian film heroine, sending in a strong message that even ‘boldness’ and ‘sex appeal’ will be accepted by the audience when portrayed by a leading lady of the film.

Not many know that Parveen Babi was the first Bollywood personality to feature on the cover of Time Magazine in the July edition of 1976. This shocked and impressed many of her contemporaries who thought her of only as a show doll.
Parveen Babi and Zeenat Aman were often compared on similar lines because of their commonly prevailing image as sex symbols packaged with talent. The actresses also shared that bonding, thanks to being typecast into one section together.
Parveen Babi’s most memorable roles include that of Jenny in Amar Akbar Anthony, Sunita in Shaan and Anita in Deewar. Her playing the role of a Catholic girl opposite Amitabh in Amar Akbar Anthony fetched her a critical and mass acclaim, creating a rare brand with exotic looks.

Parveen Babi died in 2005, aged 55. She lived a tragic life after being a successful heroine – a lonely woman who never had a a partner, Parveen was also said to be ailing with a mental disease called schizophrenia. She later suffered with diabetes in her old age.
Mahesh Bhatt, a celebrated director who was romantically linked with the actress, was heard making statements many times as to how important she was in his life as a friend and a lover.
Kangana Ranaut’s character in the film, Who lamhe, was heavily inspired by the real life Parveen Babi.
